Principal Cloud Engineer

As a Principal Cloud Engineer, you’ll be responsible for contributing to the roadmapping and design of our foundational technologies: Azure, A365, multi-cloud strategies. You’ll work with the senior management, Product, Architecture, Engineering, and Operations teams to make sure their technologies are measuring up to the needs of the firm. The Principal Cloud Engineer will be tasked with POC function on any new technologies being introduced into our cloud stack as well as being one of the technical leaders on the Cloud Platform team.

Key responsibilities

  • Contribute to the architecture, design, and quality assurance of cloud platforms
  • Tailor and implement product build-out methodologies, best practices, and standards
  • Continuously improve performance, productivity, and execution of the software organization
  • Work with business and IT senior leadership to ensure investment decisions reflect long-term strategic investments and short-term investments and provide immediate business benefits
  • Maintain the architectural principles, patterns, and best practices that guide solution design and development
  • Evolve future state cloud architecture that supports business priorities, satisfies customer goals, and meets delivery objectives
  • Oversee a governance process that reviews and monitors the design of new solutions and ensures cloud solutions comply with enterprise technology policies and standards
  • Mentor and develop the Engineering team and key members of the broader IT community to enhance their architecture perspective, skills, and experience
  • Work with peers from other business units and contribute to the long-term technical strategy
  • Participate in leadership discussions regarding new technology or enterprise system planning
  • Collaborate with vendors to provide enhancement solutions and establish a secure, effective, and efficient environment
  • The role must be involved in vendor management, understand contracts and licensing implications, and create scalable, repeatable, ecological HA solutions
  • Manage the backlog of work in a Scrum/Agile fashion
  • Monitor, alert, and log tools and build/release processes

Requirements

  • 5+ years’ experience in technology leadership, preferably within a large IT company, financial services company, or consulting organization
  • 5+ years of enterprise architecture/solution architecture experience
  • Strong experience working in Scrum/Agile methodology
  • Experience leading large-scale technical projects and programs
  • Deep Azure or AWS Core Platform: compute, storage, networking experience is required
  • Understanding of business architecture concepts and techniques
  • Proven track record of timely delivery of high-quality products and services within budget
  • Excellent oral, written, and presentation skills
  • Ability to effectively communicate complex technical and architectural concepts to technical and non-technical audiences and collaborate with remote employees and business partners
  • Capability to conceptualize alternative approaches to business needs while articulating the benefits, costs, risks, and tradeoffs of each potential approach
  • Knowledge of current and evolving security threats, technologies, and assessment and governance processes
  • Demonstrated hands-on experience of cloud computing technologies across Windows and Linux

Additional skills and knowledge

  • Deep knowledge of infrastructure solutions in relation to Microsoft programs, platform migration, system security, enterprise directories, and cloud technologies
  • Agile enough to have strategy discussions with leadership and business application partners
  • Insight into networking topologies and engineering, including DNS, Active Directory, firewalls, load balancers, and gateway devices
  • Hands-on experience with transformation from on-prem modeled infrastructure to IaC model (ARM templates, Terraform, etc.)
  • Understanding of PaaS services offered in Azure, mapping those to current application offerings
  • Strong problem analysis and solution negotiation experience
